Jail and Prison Ministry

"Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. (Heb 13:3)

What is the Jail Ministry?

The Jail Ministry is an opportunity to minister to some of the 10,000+ inmates in custody at the Maricopa Co. Jails by Lay Ministers and Ordained Clergy. The Word and Sacrament is the heart of this ministry. The Order of Worship uses the Devine Service II, Setting II from the Lutheran Worship Hymnal and also follows the lessons of the church year.

Worship Services, Bible Studies, Counseling, and More

We have eight worship services and one Bible study in the jails. There are three in the tents on Friday afternoon (Men at Noon and Women at 2:00 and 3:00 PM) and two at Estrella on Saturday at 10:00 and 11:30 AM with one on Wednesday at 1:00 PM. The Lower Buckeye Jail has services on Wednesday at 2:30 and 3:45 PM. Our Bible study is Saturday at Estrella beginning at 10:00 AM. We need volunteers as liturgists, preachers, and musicians. Music volunteers should be familiar with the liturgy and popular hymns. Teams of two or three share the service duties.

Group Bible Study using the Living Way Bible Studies are provided in the chapels and an extensive Correspondence Bible Study using Lutheran Hour Ministries and Living Way Bible Study material are administered to hundreds of inmates.

Counseling one-on-one with inmates leads to their renewed spiritual relationship with the Lord. Many each year are baptized or have their baptism vows re-affirmed.

After Care is provided on a limited basis to selected inmates thru access to halfway houses and organizations that specialize in helping jumpstart ex-offenders in recovery. All are invited to seek out a church near them or to attend Christ Church – Lutheran.
