Active Adult Ministry

Food and Fellowship at Christ Church – Lutheran

Come join the Active Adult Ministry every month for engaging presentations and a wonderful lunch! 3901 E Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018. The program begins at 9:30am with conversations with our “adopted” fifth grade class, followed by a brief business meeting. Next a professional speaker presents the topics below, before lunch. There is no charge, but you must rsvp at 602.955.4830, or sign up at the AAM table during coffee hour on either of the two Sundays prior to the event.

November 6 – The Most Courageous Arizona Journalist You’ve Never Heard Of

One of Arizona’s most decorated journalists, Jana Bommersbach, presents a fascinating tale about Laura Nihell, a banned journalist and protester of Arizona’s Chinese Purge, circa 1909.

December 4 – Christmas program by the fifth graders

January 8 The Science of Music, the Music of Science

Learn from singer, band leader and journalist, Dr. Janice Jarrett, about the correlations between science and music and why so many high level professionals are musicians and musicians are scientists.

February 5 – Life in the Circus

Join us as we explore the lives of Melungeons in early America, particularly as performers in the early circus. Ed James, renowned researcher, will educate us on this somewhat unknown group of people.

March 4 – On the Mission Field in Africa

Listen to our own Ed and Wilma Rupprecht and their adventures in wild Africa and their work with Lutheran Bible Translators.

April 1 – Coded Messages and Songs of the Underground Railroad

Communication and secrecy were key to the successful operation of the Underground Railroad. Come hear Dr. Tamika Sanders present the ingenuity and resiliency used by the Railroad to help over 100,000 slaves get to freedom in the pre-20th century.

May 6 – The Shadow Catchers: 150 Years of Arizona Photography

Join author/editor, Jim Turner, as he presents powerful images from the past 150 years that made our great state and its people come alive.
